April 15 was a good day for the regional and international development of the Netherlands. It was the day that Holland Gateway hosted the NFIA Kenniscafé gathering. A gathering that saw the coming together of the main players in regional and national development. Organizations that attended were: the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND), Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA), Amsterdam in Business (AiB), WestHolland Foreign Investment Agency (WFIA), Flevoland development agency (OMFL), North Netherlands development agency (NOM), East Netherlands development agency (Oost NV), Utrecht Investment Agency (UIA), Rotterdam Investment Agency (RIA), Development company Rotterdam (OBR), Directorate of foreign economic relations (DGBEB) and of course the host itself, Holland Gateway. A considerable portion of the organizations dedicated to increasing and stimulating foreign investment and regional investment in the Netherlands were thus represented. The speaker of the day was Wilbert van de Griendt (Director regular/economy of IND). The theme of his presentation was the impending implementation of the new Dutch migration policy. Also present was project manager Martijn Buurman of the IND.
Mr. Van de Griendt commenced his presentation outlining the flaws of the current migration policy, explaining that its characteristics were better suited to the time in which it was conceived. The importance of adjusting the migration policy to modern times became clear as he outlined the various difficulties that immigrants are faced with on a daily basis. The new policy is designed not only to be more lenient on those that provide an additional value to the Netherlands, but also to be more restrictive to those that do not. Mr. Van de Griendt went on to explain the coupling of the entry visa and residence permit application, a step that was designed to eliminate unnecessary upheaval for legitimate applicants. Other topics discussed were the current handling procedures at the IND as well as the steps taken to, among others, digitize application forms and papers. This will greatly ease workloads and will increase efficiency. It will also aid in the information exchange between government bodies. The excellent presentation was rounded off with a question session where a few interesting new insights were opened up. To close off a successful day, the participants indulged in the closing drink for some light weight networking and discussion. Participants left late and seemed very pleased about the event. |
